Khadija Shaw injured during game
On Sunday, Manchester City(W) comfortably defeated West Ham United 5-0, with Khadija Shaw putting in an impressive performance, helping her team reclaim the top spot in the Women's Super League standings. However, Manchester City's celebrations were dampened as concerns arose over Shaw's health after she was substituted off in the first half. Towards the end of the first half, Shaw suddenly rose and needed assistance to leave the field, making it a disappointing end to an otherwise brilliant day.
With just 24 seconds left in the game, Laila Wahabi broke the deadlock, setting the tone for City's dominance in the first half. Shaw's two brilliant shots put Manchester City in control. However, West Ham United grew into the game, especially as their hosts' level dropped in the second quarter. Khiara Keating made an excellent block, denying Viviane Asseyi, one of three Hammers players who found themselves thwarted by the woodwork, while Riko Ueki might feel she should have done better with her one-on-one opportunity.
Just as the game seemed to be nearing its end, Laura Blindkilde Brown, who joined the club in January for a hefty transfer fee, scored her first goal for the club in the latter stages of the second half, reigniting excitement among the home fans. This seemed to rejuvenate Manchester City, and Jessie Park added further gloss with a splendid finish in the dying moments.
